    He hated dull, gray monotony as fiercely as another art rebel, Antonio Gaudi. Both masters highly valued flowing natural lines and especially rich and bright colors; they often used spiral and infinity motifs, broken colored tiles and voluminous concrete structures in their works.

    At the age of 21, the artist changed his too ordinary name to a more sonorous and original one, based on its sound and meaning. The resulting pseudonym can be roughly translated as “rich in the world of a hundred springs of water.” This also reflects his position in life - the master believed that humanity is simply obliged to compensate for the damage that it causes to wildlife through industrialization. Hence its intricately painted bright and life-affirming facades of houses, buildings with trees growing from them, as well as the famous hill house in New Zealand. It literally merges with the surrounding nature, and sheep, so common in this country, graze on the turf that covers it.

    Over the years of his life, Hundertwasser became famous as an artist, graphic artist, and extraordinary decorator. He illustrated the Bible, painted houses in incredible colors, and taught at the Vienna Academy of Arts for many years. His talent was recognized, the master was awarded several prizes, including for the protection of nature.
